DAY 1 CHIANG RAI
On arrival transfer to the hotel. Time at leisure or just explore the city by yourself. In the evening we do recommend a stroll over the little, but colorful night- and food market of Chiang Rai..
DAY 2 CHIANG RAI - GOLDEN TRIANGLE - CHIANG RAI B/L
In the morning you are picked up from the hotel by our tour guide and driver. Travel to the north and first take a brief stop at scenic Wat Rong Suer Ten (better known as the blue temple). Later take a side trip to the mountain Doi Tung. Visit the beautiful royal garden, as well as an Akha hill tribe village. Go on to Mae Sai, the market- and border town to Myanmar. Here take a stroll over the bustling border market. Your lunch break will be on route at a local restaurant. Then continue to the well known Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. Have a look in to the Opium Museum, where you learn more about the history of Opium in this region An OPTIONAL short boat trip on the mighty Mekong River van be booked on site. Continue along the river to the former royal town of Chiang Saen. Then it is time for your return to Chiang Rai and you will be back at the hotel by late afternoon. Spend another night in Chiang Rai.
DAY 3 CHIANG RAI - MAE KOK RIVER - THATON B/L
After breakfast visit beautiful Wat Rong Khun (better known as the white temple). followed by transfer to the boat station and start for a scenic trip by a long tail boat up the Kok River. Take some brief stops on route, such as at the hot springs (opportunity to take a bath) and at a Lahu hill tribe village. Enjoy scenic landscapes and remote villages during this boat trip. Then reach the Shan riverside village of Ban Mai and continue on the road to Thaton. Visit Wat Thaton with its giant Buddha statues and enjoy the great views to the Kok Valley and nearby Burmese mountain wilderness. There is some time left to relax at the nice riverside resort on the banks of the Kok River. Overnight in Thaton.
DAY 4 THATON - DOI ANGKHANG - CHIANG MAI B/L
In the morning leave Thaton and take first a brief stop at a traditional rice mill. Then drive on some steep and winding roads up to the hill top station of Doi Angkahng. Here you got the chance for a stroll around the royal farming project. Afterwards visit one of the rare Palong hill tribe villages. Continue through the mountain wilderness along the Burmese border area and pass some remote villages. Later arrive the Ping Valley near Chiang Dao, where you can explore the local cave temple. Travel on towards Chiang Mai. On route take some brief stops, such as at the local country side market of Mae Malai (here you can taste some exotic specialities) and at an orchid farm in Mae Rim. Finally arrive Chiang Mai in the late afternoon. Spend the night here in the northern capital.
DAY 5 CHIANG MAI B
Transfer to the airport, railway station or extend your stay in Chiang Mai, depends on your further schedule.
REMARKS/FLEXIBILITY:
- This round trip can be done also v. v. with start in Chiang Mai and end of the tour in Chiang Rai.
